Workplace English

Government-funded programs offer free English for work: writing emails, taking part in meetings, job interviews and talking with customers. Some classes are for specific fields such as health care, engineering or business.

Who can join

These classes are for permanent residents, protected persons and some other newcomers. Canadian citizens are not eligible. You may need a language assessment first. Your settlement agency can tell you what is available near you and online.

Practise at work

  • Write down phrases your coworkers use, and ask what they mean.
  • Practise small talk: weekend plans, the weather, sports.
  • In emails, start with a greeting and keep sentences short and polite.
