Your right to an account

In Canada you can open a personal bank account without a job and without depositing money right away. The bank must see acceptable identification.

What to bring

  • Two pieces of identification from the official list, or one piece plus a reference the bank accepts.
  • Your immigration document, such as a COPR or a permit.

Newcomer packages

Most large banks offer newcomer accounts with lower fees for the first year and a first credit card without a Canadian credit history. Compare the monthly fee after the offer ends, not only the welcome bonus.

Tips

  • Ask for a chequing account for daily spending and a savings account for your savings.
  • Ask how to send and receive Interac e-Transfers. Landlords and employers often use them.
