Warning signs

  • The landlord says they are abroad and cannot show you the unit.
  • The rent is much lower than similar places nearby.
  • They ask for a deposit by wire transfer, gift cards or cryptocurrency.
  • They ask for your SIN, passport or bank login before you sign.
  • They push you to decide today.

Protect yourself

  • See the unit in person or by live video call, and check that the person can open the door.
  • Search the address and the photos online to see if they appear in other listings.
  • Pay only after you sign a lease, and keep receipts.

If it happens

Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and to your local police.
